Helpful Hints
Here are some helpful hints to assist in getting the most out of your coffee every day:
Start with fresh-roasted coffee. The ideal time for drinking coffee is 7-14 days from roasting.
Grind your coffee beans as you need them. You will get the most flavour out of your coffee this way.
Store your coffee beans in the resealable pack with the one-way valve, not in an airtight container. After roasting coffee beans, they give off a CO2 gas. Storing your coffee in the resealable pack with the one-way valve lets this gas escape and keeps air from getting in and spoiling your beans.
Store your coffee in a cool dark place (do not refrigerate or your coffee will acquire moisture and spoil the beans.)
You can freeze coffee in an airtight container but you will not get the same flavour as fresh coffee.
Buy smaller quantities of coffee regularly rather than in bulk. Mighty Fine Coffee offer an AUTOBUY service. So if you know you drink 250 grams of coffee a fortnight, Mighty Fine Coffee will send you 250 grams of coffee a fortnight, to ensure you never run out of coffee. Just select the “AUTOBUY” option on the last page of the checkout.
Use the right proportion of coffee to water. I use one tablespoon per cup for a strong cup. Peoples' tastes vary so start with this and adjust to your taste. Over time you will develop your perfect cup every time.
Use good-quality water. Water is the other large part of your brew, so it makes sense that it will affect the taste. If your tap water is not of a good standard, you may consider using filtered or bottled water.
If using a plunger, do not use boiling water. Let the water cool for 2-3 minutes in the kettle before pouring into the plunger.
Leave the water and coffee to brew for a few minutes before serving. (Do not leave too long or the coffee will become bitter.)
If using a percolator or dripper coffee system, use good-quality filters.
Thoroughly clean your coffeepot as the oil from the coffee will make your next cup taste bitter. You cannot see the residue so use soap and give it a good scrub, then rinse two or three times to get the soap out. A dishwasher also does a great job.
Clean the water tank. This is as much for hygiene purposes as it is a coffee thing. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and clean the machine weekly. Mineral and oil build-up can turn your coffee bitter. Use descaler solution for best results.
Enjoy!
